About this guide
This guide lays out a plan for Pratt faculty and administration to successfully meet strategic plan goals to reduce the cost of a Pratt education and create an open access (OA) repository for faculty and student research, creative work, and pedagogical materials. But it is a transferable document, especially for other art, design, liberal arts institutions who, like Pratt, may struggle with getting a foothold on integrating open education into the curriculum and open access into the research mindset.
Open education is closely aligned with several of Pratt Institute’s learning goals, including justice, environmental sustainability, resilience, and creative problem solving. It is similarly reflected in Pratt’s longstanding history of public-facing work and more recent faculty interest in participatory methods, co-design, and inclusive pedagogies that center diversity, equity, and accessibility. These methods and approaches sit in broad alliance with notions of collaboration, sharing, and access that are at the heart of OER.
While Pratt’s history and values align closely with OER, it is not always recognized as such, even among faculty who may be using open resources in their classrooms. This resource will serve as an early set of guidelines and recommendations for how to raise awareness of OER among our faculty and equip them with strategies and resources for using OER in teaching and learning.
