Pratt is Open

Pratt is open is a guide that will help Pratt Institute administration and faculty successfully meet strategic plan goals to (1) reduce the cost of a Pratt education and (2) create an open access (OA) repository for faculty and student research, creative

Initial steps

Research and develop design specifications for an institutional repository focused on visual and creative work. Metrics for success include broad-based outreach to stakeholders and completion of a design document that summarizes this user research, specifies technical needs and workflows for an institutional repository, and recommends possible platforms and a timeline for implementation. Timeline: Summer & Fall 2023

  1. Focus groups about IR efforts and needs Speaking to faculty and administrators about the kind of content they produce will help inform the technical specifications necessary for an Institutional Repository, help inform the outreach and instruction necessary to get faculty and students to contribute to the repository, help us anticipate concerns and other areas that will need to be addressed.

  2. Schedule meetings with Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD) schools that have institutional repositories. In addition to discussions around design specifications, discuss staffing needs and workflows for content ingestion as well as outreach.

  3. Schedule product demonstrations with IR vendors and developers.

Policy review

Develop and review policies on intellectual property and open access. What role (if any) will policies and mandates play in efforts to populate an IR and create OER? Timeline: Summer & Fall 2023

  1. Work with the Advisory Committee for Intellectual Property to reassess the current Intellectual Property Policy

  2. Work with the Office of the Provost (including staff from the Research & Strategic Partnerships Department), Libraries, Council’s Office, Chair’s Council, and the Academic Senate to create an Open Access Policy for Pratt that is focused on publishing Pratt works. This policy will supersede or add on to the Libraries’ Open Access Policy that is focused on collection development.

Education

Educate faculty & administration about open licensing and open access and intellectual property. This will serve to prime the pump for the launch of an IR and further support development of OER. Stipend p/t faculty. Timeline: Spring - Fall 2024

  1. Develop and expand existing Library authored research guides and instructional videos such as those on OER, OA, and copyright

  2. Staff from the Libraries and Office of the Provost design and deploy a workshop on open licensing and open access.
