Making Video Tutorials

a guide for producing video tutorials for Pratt Institute Libraries using Adobe Express

Screen Recording

There are lots of great free tools for recording your screen. Here are my personal favorites on your operating system:

Windows 10

How to record your Windows PC screen using Xbox Game Bar. (the Verge)

Mac OS X

How to use Quicktime to record your screen. (Apple Support)

Video Editing

I've included three key video editing tools below. Which option you choose depends largely on how complicated a video you want to make and how comfortable you are with video editing. For most folks, I recommend using Adobe Spark. This tool is very simple and easy to use. It also runs in a browser, so you can use it with any operating system. Just log in with your Pratt OneKey and you're good to go!

 Express

This browser-based solution allows you to record sound clips, insert slides/videos, and insert fancy animations with ease. Fortunately, this tool has built-in tutorials that walk you through the editing process!

 Premiere

This is the tool to use if you need do custom animations, heavy duty video or audio editing, and rendering of high resolution videos. Like most professional Adobe products, the learning curve is steep. Fortunately, we have access to lots of in-depth tutorials on Premiere in Linkedin Learning.

KDENlive

This is the best open-source video editing tool I have personally used. If you can't access Adobe tools on your desktop, KDENlive will give you much of the same high-level video editing tools without having to spend a cent.

One-shot alternatives

You can use Google Meet or Zoom in conjunction with a presentation tool like Google Slides or Powerpoint to record a one-shot tutorial with your screen and webcam. This approach is very simple, but there are many challenges if you choose to go this route.

  • doing the tutorial in one shot leaves a lot of possibility to make mistakes, forget something, or say the wrong thing.
  • If your webcam is on, your recorded screen will be smaller in the final video and this can be hard for folks to see.

Adobe Creative Suite

At Pratt, we can install the Adobe Creative Suite on our personal computers. This is an invaluable resource as a number of the tools can be used to produce video tutorials. In particular, Illustrator or Photoshop is useful for creating graphics that can be integrated in video content and Premiere can be used for editing & rendering your video.
