Making Video Tutorials

a guide for producing video tutorials for Pratt Institute Libraries using Adobe Express

Use Google Slides to make Graphics

Don't feel comfortable using Photoshop to create graphics? You can use Google Slides or Powerpoint to assemble a slide that you like and then export it as images. Then, you can upload those images as slides in Adobe Spark or the video editing software of your choice. This can be a quick and easy way to create unique slides and get around some of the complexity of video editing.

Break the steps down like Missy

From Missy's Step-by-Step Instructions:

How I broke it down to not get overwhelmed:

  • Write a script that is about 3 minutes long. Chunk it out into short (1-2 sentence) paragraphs. Each of these will be one slide of your video - be succinct!
  • Record yourself reading your script more slowly than natural - I used the voice memo app on my phone.
  • Listen to your voice recording while recording your screen capture. This is so much easier than talking while doing a demo (I don’t know why that is SO IMPOSSIBLE). (Be aware of moving your mouse more slowly than normal.) Game Bar automatically saves the file.
  • When done, open Adobe Spark. Some elements are familiar - it feels like you're making Google Slides or a PPT.
  • Make an opening title slide with text. Upload the library branding (this should be saved in a folder).
  • Upload small segments of your video for each slide (no more than 15 seconds). Record your voice over the video. (Have your script available on a split screen, second monitor or your phone).
  • Repeat.
  • Save file and share in Faculty Drive-> Videos
