Through the GCPE department's four fields of praxis: Urban & Community Planning, Historic Preservation, Sustainable Environmental Systems, and Urban Placemaking & Management, we are challenged with addressing climate change, systemic oppression and racism, and growing inequity. Communities need forward-thinking approaches to urbanism now more than ever to address harm and repair, and to plan for our collective futures. Practice-based and rooted deeply in the network of communities we serve, the GCPE works in partnership to build asset-based solutions at the intersection of environment, equity, culture, and economy.
As practitioners we are all on a continued journey of learning.
The GCPE faculty is a community of educators and practitioners of vast experiences, social identities, positions and locations in the world -- and in the classroom. Understanding and navigating diversity, equity, inclusion and justice is our individual and collective responsibility in our efforts towards making change and a just future for all.
In this DEIJ Primer, there are three sections: 1) Racialized Housing in the United States; 2) Understanding Power, Privilege, and Intersectionality; and 3) Integrating DEIJ into the Classroom and Syllabus. Use the panel on the left to navigate through the DEIJ Primer. Each section includes an estimated suggested time and self-led activities and videos to help build and revisit your individualized learning to support your growth as a GCPE faculty member and practitioner. It is recommended to go through each section on separate occasions to best digest and reflect on your learning. Note: Additional resources are available in the Resources at Pratt and External Resources section of this guide.
