Critical Museology

The U.S. Latinx Art Forum champions artists and arts professionals engaged in research, studio practice, pedagogy, and writing. We generate and support initiatives that advance the vitality of Latinx art through an intergenerational network that spans academia, art institutions, and collections.

Established in 1979, and officially recognized as an affiliated society of the College Art Association in 1997, ALAA aims to encourage the highest standards of scholarship, criticism, and teaching in the art and architectural history of Latin America.

Founded in 1989, QCA nurtures and encourages the study of LGBTQIA history, theory, criticism, and studio practice in the arts. Through its various activities, the group fosters better communication and understanding among its members, academic communities, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, and the public at large.

The Association of African American Museums (AAAM) is a non-profit member organization established to support African and African American focused museums nationally and internationally, as well as the professionals who protect, preserve and interpret African and African American art, history and culture. Established as the single representative and principal voice of the African American museum movement, the Association seeks to strengthen and advocate for the interests of institutions and individuals committed to the preservation of African-derived cultures.

The Feminist Art Project is an international collaborative initiative celebrating the Feminist Art Movement and the aesthetic, intellectual and political impact of women on the visual arts, art history, and art practice, past and present. It is a strategic grassroots intervention against the ongoing erasure of women artists and arts professionals of all gender expressions from the cultural record.

This collaborative project seeks to align museums with more equitable and inclusive practices. As the museum field begins to shape its identity in the 21st century, MASS Action poses the following questions for practitioners to consider: What is the role and responsibility of the museum in responding to issues affecting our communities locally and globally? How do the museum’s internal practices need to change in order to align with, and better inform, their public practice? How can the museum be used as a site for social action? Through a series of public convenings and the creation of a toolkit of resources, this project's intention is to share the strategies and frameworks needed to address these important topics.

We are a non-hierarchical group of arts and museum workers who are friends and colleagues, and who founded Art + Museum Transparency at the end of May 2019 when we shared our salaries with each other over drinks. That night, we created an open, editable spreadsheet on Google Docs that contained our salaries at current and past positions, and shared it on our social networks and various listservs, including the art history program at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Museums & Race is a movement to challenge and re-imagine institutional policies and systems that perpetuate oppressions in museums.
