Equipment Loan

How do I borrow equipment?

First things first, complete the Equipment Loan Agreement. Please read the Equipment Loan Agreement carefully - it contains the terms and conditions for borrowing equipment.

Once you've completed the Equipment Loan Agreement, you are ready to borrow equipment! Borrowing equipment is free. You do not need to be in a certain department or major to borrow equipment. You do not need to request equipment a certain number of days in advance or schedule a pick up or drop off appointment, just stop by when we are open and make sure you return your equipment by its due date.

Please note,  we are a small resource center and we serve the entire Pratt community: availability may be limited, especially during midterms and finals. To ensure that you get what you need, when you need it, you may place equipment on hold. You can do so online, the same as you would a book. If you place equipment on hold, it becomes available for immediate pickup or if it's out with someone else, it becomes available for you to pick up as soon as the person who has it returns. We hold items for 7 days. The amount of time we hold equipment until you can pick it up doesn't count towards your time with it - once you pick it up, you then have it for 7 days.

How long may I keep equipment?

You may keep equipment for seven days.

What happens if I return equipment late?

If you return equipment late, you will be assessed a late fee of $5 per item per day that that item is kept after its due date. Items that are four or more weeks overdue will be presumed lost and a replacement fee will be applied to your account. Replacement fees for equipment are assessed based on the price of the item.

If you have outstanding fines amounting to or exceeding $10, you cannot borrow or renew library materials, including course reserves, or place Interlibrary Loan requests until the fines are paid. If you have an outstanding fines of any amount at the end of your final semester, you cannot graduate until fines are paid.

What happens if I lose my equipment? What do I do if my equipment is stolen?

If you lose equipment, a replacement fee will be assessed based on the price of the item that was lost.

If your equipment is stolen, please report the crime to Public Safety or the NYPD and provide the Libraries with the report.

May I renew equipment?

Yes! You may request a maximum of two renewals for each item that you borrow, meaning that if it is available to be renewed each time, you will have it for a total of three weeks. You may call the Equipment Loan Office at (718) 636-3626, email equipment.library@pratt.edu, or come in-person to request a renewal.

However, there are several scenarios in which you may not renew equipment:

  • You may not renew equipment that is past its due date. Online renewals cannot be late by even one minute - the system is very precise.

  • You may not renew an item more than twice. If you have renewed an item twice already, you must return that item by the due date you were given when you renewed it the second time.

  • You may not renew equipment that is on hold for another patron. If you who have an item that has been placed on hold for another patron, you must return that item by its due date.

Failure to adhere to the policies and procedures listed above will result in a late fine. If you believe an email you receive about overdue equipment and/or an outstanding fine to have been sent in error, you must contact us as soon as possible.

Do I need a reservation to use the photo light box?

Reservations are not required to use the photo light box. The light box is free to use when it is not booked. However, you may make a reservation here. The light box is equipped with a camera during the Equipment Loan Office's opening hours. You may use the light box after-hours but you must provide your own camera.
