The Morgan Library & Museum’s collection of Humphry Repton’s Red Books showcases the work of the pioneering 18th-century English landscape designer. These personalized, hand-produced volumes were created for clients to visualize proposed garden and estate transformations. Each Red Book features Repton’s signature “before-and-after” watercolor overlays, commentary, and plans, blending artistry with practical design. They exemplify the Picturesque movement and offer rare insight into Georgian-era aesthetics, land use, and social ideals. The Morgan’s holdings preserve several of these unique manuscripts, reflecting Repton’s enduring legacy in landscape architecture and his innovative use of visual storytelling to communicate spatial and environmental change.
